How to check Arabic fonts before printing a PDF

Diagnose changed Arabic fonts, disconnected letters and mixed-direction lines. Check the exported PDF before committing to a full print run.

A magnifying glass over printed teal calligraphic shapes, with similar shapes on a laptop screen.

If Arabic text changes font or its letters become disconnected, inspect the PDF itself before blaming the printer. Establish whether the problem exists in the original document, appears during export or occurs only on paper. Each points to a different next step.

Compare the same line in both files

Choose a line containing joined letters, a number and punctuation. Compare it in the source and exported copy, then check a table or long heading: a substituted font can change line lengths even when individual letters look plausible.

What you see Check first
The source already looks wrong Font choice, paragraph direction and text entry
The source is correct but the export differs Export settings and embedded fonts
The PDF differs between devices Font embedding and the PDF viewer
The screen is correct but paper differs A sample on that printer and its print settings

These are diagnostic starting points, not a claim that every symptom has one cause. Do not manually reverse letters to make a single preview look right.

Check font embedding

Embedding stores font data in the PDF so viewing it does not depend on the same font being installed elsewhere. Font licensing can restrict embedding, and substitution can occur when a font is unavailable. Adobe explains embedding and substitution.

Inspect the font list in document properties if your reader provides one. If a font is missing from the embedded set, return to the source, use a suitable font that permits embedding and export again. Renaming a file extension to PDF does not convert it.

Test mixed-direction text

Check phone numbers and dates inside Arabic sentences, brackets beside English words, and the order of table columns. A standalone heading is not a sufficient test: a problem may affect just one paragraph.

Open the file on another device if possible and print the page containing the hardest example. Keep the editable source. Avoid turning every page into an image merely to bypass checking: that removes searchable text and can reduce the sharpness of the letters.

Upload the copy you checked

After correcting fonts, use the print-ready file checklist and confirm that the paper size has not changed during export. Test a sample before ordering several copies, particularly for equations or small vowel marks.
